Thomas knows that Wicked can't be trusted, but they say the time for lies is over, that they've collected all they can from the Trials and now must rely on the Gladers, with full memories restored, to help them with their ultimate mission. It's up to the Gladers to complete the blueprint for the cure to the Flare with a final voluntary test.
Wow, talk about needing to catch your breath after reading a book. I've not read another series that kept me so invested with the story based on the action, the twists and the mystery alone, like this series did! Similar to The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure was non stop action from page one to the every end. Talk about plot twists, this story line is full of them. James Dashner has created a story that's complex, mystifying, and completely engaging. I couldn't get enough of it.
Like being in the dark on what's going to happen next in a story? Well James made it literally impossible for me to try and figure out what was going to happen. Much like Thomas, I had no idea on who I could trust or believe, other than his two closest friends. Was WICKED really good, or were they really evil. Were those working for them really in the dark on what they were doing, or were some of the people there a bit delusional on in their ways? Or maybe they were right. I honestly still have no idea. What I do know, is that The Death Cure takes everything from first two books, and takes up to a whole new level.
I admire James for the fact he's not afraid to inflict pain on his characters. Okay that was nice way of putting torture them. I don't know where the characters get the strength they all have to help them endure all they go through. The Death Cure is brutal on them, emotionally, mentally and physically. It's not just the characters who suffer, but the readers. James isn't afraid to kill off characters I was emotionally invested in, which made for some pretty intense scenes, especially the one between Thomas and...... you'll have to read it to know who I'm talking about. Ugh, that scene was a killer!
The is definitely one action packed series! The first two books did a fantastic job at leading up to what happens in The Death Cure, but let me just say this book is intense! There's violence, which is completely fitting for what is going on in this book, there's casualties, and there's a bit of the unknown in this book, which I liked. James reveals some shocking answers to some of my questions, but he also leaves some open ended, and I liked that. It was very fitting for the series, and had he wrapped up everything nicely, he wouldn't have stayed true to the storyline. While that doesn't normally work for me in a series, it's the perfect ending for Thomas's story. I definitely recommend picking this book up! Be warned, you'll be thinking about everything that happened long after you read it.
Guess what's coming out next year?!? A prequel called The Kill Order! Go HERE to read more information about it's upcoming release.
